Building a Sailing Trimaran

"Left Foot," a sailing trimaran

Welcome to my trimaran project page! For about six months between August 2006 and February 2007, I worked on building a 16-foot sailboat design called a "trimaran" (sort of like a catamaran, but with three hulls, not two). This web site will allow you to walk through my whole experience, so you might get a better idea about what goes in to building one of these boats, or better yet, learn from my experience if you choose to build one yourself.

The boat was built based upon the "Trilars" design by Jim Michalak. I deviated a great deal from the original design, especially when it came to the sailing rig and fittings. My modifications include widening the beam (width) to 10 feet, changing the shapes of the float hulls, doubling the sail area by adding a jib sail and enlarging the mainsail, and changing the leeboard to two centerboards located in the float hulls.
